Blog3Saddle up and get ready for the thrill of a lifetime with a mule ride which traverses 26 switchbacks down the tallest sea cliffs in the world to the isolated peninsula of Kalaupapa. Many who take the adventure say it was the highlight of their Hawaii trip and return years later with friends and family to share the experience with them.Blog2

The mule ride begins at the stables where you’re assigned a mule by “Uncle Buzzy”, the company owner and mule trainer who’s been leading the mule rides since 1973. Once you’ve mounted your mule, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride as the mules know their way down the 2.9 mile trail. Every turn provides breathtaking views so be sure to bring your camera.

When you reach the peninsula, you’ll dismount and meet your Damien Tours’ guide who will drive you around and share the history of the area as well as the gravesites of Saint Damien and Saint Marianne who devoted their lives to the Hansen’s disease patients who lived at Kalaupapa.

Lunch, which is included in the tour, is served on the Kalawao side with picturesque views complimented by the sound of the waves.  After your tour is finished, you’ll saddle back up on your mule and head back up the cliffs, taking in a few last views of this special Hawaiian place.

Tours are available Monday through Saturday, but make reservations well in advance as the tour group is small and spaces fill up quickly. Riders must be at least 16 years of age. For more information, please visit
