Originally from North Carolina, Mike moved to Chicago, where he met his wife, Kathy. She is the founder of the Lanai Cat Sanctuary, a nonprofit animal rescue center on Lanai. On their 20th anniversary, they planned to vacation on Lanai for 10 days. They fell so in love with Lanai that on their 5th day on the island, they decided to look at houses with a realtor. They spotted a shack and instantly knew, “that’s the one for us.”

Mike and Kathy started to come to Lanai a month or two at a time to renovate their shack and transform it into a cozy cottage, while Mike also painted in oils on the island. Eventually, they sold everything in Chicago and agreed to do a two year test run living on Lanai. Now, over 15 years later, they are still living on the island and enjoying every minute of it!

“In all of Hawaii, there is nothing like Lanai.” says Mike. “Everyone is so kind to each other and treats each other so well.” Mike takes great pleasure in sharing the beauty of Lanai through his paintings and he finds inspiration for his artwork everywhere he goes on the island.

One way Mike becomes inspired is by his daily morning walks with his wife, Kathy. Mike loves how the town has a “1920-1930s old Hawaii craftsman style charm.” As he walks through the city and the backstreets, he spots something magnificent he can paint every day. Mike has guest artists that will keep coming back to visit the island, because they are so amazed that a place like Lanai still exists!

Mike wants to make sure that everyone who stops by the gallery is able to take home a fond memory. Mike’s oil paintings can be purchased in a range of different sizes, so there is something for every budget. For those looking for a unique scene on the island, Mike paints commissioned artwork as well.
